In Honor of Black History Month

“I am America. I am the part you won't recognize. But get
used to me. Black, confident, cocky; my name, not yours;
my religion, not yours; my goals, my own; get used to me.”

(Following greeting from the Sanctuary of the Open Heart)

Beloveds,

Here, at the beginning of February, we find ourselves at the midway point between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. In the northern hemisphere, we are still in winter and yet the longest and darkest nights are behind us and we anticipate the increasing light that will bring nature to life again.

Today, with our Earth Mother, we celebrate the holy fire festival of lights: Imbolc. We light our hearth candles in gratitude for the Goddess' promise of renewal. We feel our spirits begin to quicken as we anticipate the rebirth of nature and all that has been growing inside of us.

The sun is growing in strength...the Child of Promise re-born at Winter Solstice, is now the growing Child. All is pregnant and expectant. Can you feel the promise of renewal, of hidden potential, of earth awakening and life-force stirring?

IMBOLCpoem by Jill Yarnall
So the skies rumbled and the snows came,
And everywhere down through the centuries of this gray night,
Came women gathering to pray,
And to sink their hands into the dark earth.
They gathered seeds and prepared them for planting,
They meditated in the icy darkness,
And they celebrated the lambing of the first ewe,
To hasten spring.
And when through the earth they felt the stirring,
They sang songs encouraging the tiny seeds to grow.
In the dark, wet soil you can smell their work still;
They are digging along beside us. Listen!
The north wind carries their song across the snow,
This Imbolc night.
As the Earth prepares for Spring,
Wise women gather in circles to await the promise of new life,
And to sing praises for the green earth.
And so do we, here now,
This year, and every year.
Welcome Imbolc!
