Article: Out of darkness, light by Starhawk

Winter Solstice–the shortest day and longest night of the year. For Pagans, Wiccans and Goddess worshippers,

Winter Solstice–the shortest day and longest night of the year. For Pagans, Wiccans and Goddess worshippers, this is one of our most sacred holidays. As winter closes in, the darkness grows and the light recedes. For Pagans, darkness is the necessary balance to light. We don’t conceive of the dark as evil, but as a place of potential, of gestation–the black, fertile soil where the seed puts forth roots and shoots, the dark womb where new life is nurtured. But being humans, we also have a natural affinity for the light, the time of growth and new beginnings, of warmth and color and bright new hopes. Solstice reminds us that no darkness, no loss, no grief or disappointment is final. Out of darkness, light is born. Every ending gives rise to a new beginning. Out of disappointment and despair comes new courage, new hope.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Winter solstice is the astronomical phenomenon marking the day with the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year. In the northern hemisphere, it is happening now, while in the southern hemisphere, it occurs in June. Sunrise at the ancient Stonehenge celebrates it. Northern Europeans call it yule. Cultures around the world have picked up on the yule traditions with customs of a Christmas tree, wreath and the yule log. It is a definitive communication to all peoples everywhere that Life is cyclical and natural. This Truth brings me Great joy. My heart sings, knowing I am here to grow through the cycles of my imperfect Life.
There is no astrological day that is the ideal from which other days deviate. There is no group of friends who are perfect. There are no family traditions observed because that’s the way it has to be. If things make sense, are healthy for all involved and allow joy, bring them on. These cycles in Life Create the diversification and fun inherent in a rich, full and meaningful Life.
This amount of sunlight versus night is ever changing. It obeys the laws of the universe in its trip through the galaxy. As I give myself permission to learn and expand, I can offer that same acceptance to others. Let’s embrace the differences we observe in others. We are cyclical. This holiday is cyclical. The universe is cyclical. Let us embrace change and celebrate it.

"This is the time of the rose, blossom and thorn, fragrance and blood. Now on this longest day, light triumphs, and yet begins the decline into the dark. The Sun King grown, embraces the Queen of Summer in a love that is death because it is so complete that all dissolves into the single song of ecstasy that moves the worlds. So the Lord of Light dies to himself, and sets sail across the dark seas of time, searching for the Isle of Light that is rebirth. We turn the wheel and share his fate, for we have planted the seeds of our o
wn changes and we must accept even the passing of the sun. We honor the Lord of Death, who is the Lord of Life; and the Triple Goddess who is the circle of rebirth."
